8 Ways To Decrease Your Toxic Load

By: Samantha Fidler, NTP

In today’s world, we are constantly surrounded by an ever-growing number of toxins, chemicals, and harmful ingredients.  Many of these chemicals are made up of something called Xenoestrogens which are synthetic and manmade.  They can not only disrupt our Endocrine System, but they can be harmful to our body.  They are found in plastic, sealants, consumer goods, preservatives, pesticides, etc.

Over time, these can build up in our body and cause many of the symptoms we experience today – headaches, skin rashes and breakouts, bloat, digestive discomfort, hormone imbalance, weight gain, low energy/fatigue, infertility, the list goes on.

Although this information can sometimes feel overwhelming, there are many ways that we can be proactive and take action to reduce our exposure to these harmful ingredients, which will help eliminate our symptoms.

Here are some helpful ways to reduce our toxic load and exposure:

  1. No More Plastic: Plastic is used in many of our common household items. However, this can be a quick and easy first step to reduce our exposure to chemicals. Replace plastic containers with glass. Instead of purchasing food or liquid items in plastic, choose items in glass instead. Don’t heat up food in plastic; use glass or ceramic instead.

  2. Choose Organic foods whenever possible. This will help to reduce exposure to pesticides and herbicides.

  3. Glyphosate Free. Glyphosate is a toxic weedkiller and is one of the most widely used herbicides in agriculture.  Unfortunately, it has contaminated many of the common foods we consume every day.  When purchasing products containing soy, corn, oats, grains, beans/legumes, coffee, and cereal, make sure to check the ingredient labels for glyphosate and avoid these items at all costs.

  4. Fragrance Free: Many beauty products, skincare, cleaning products, candles, perfumes, contain harmful synthetic fragrances. These fragrances consist of hundreds and thousands of chemicals that are not listed on ingredient labels. When purchasing these items, we recommend Fragrance free to avoid exposure to these chemicals. Some Beauty and Cleaning products that we recommend are Beauty Counter, Ilia, Kosas, Cocokind, Primally Pure, and Branch Basics.

  5. Organic Tampons and Feminine Products.  We recommend purchasing items that do NOT have a plastic applicator and are fragrance free.  These items do not contain harmful pesticides, chemicals, or dyes.

  6. The Yuka App and the Environmental Working Group (EWG) App are both great resources that allow you to scan items while shopping or search for specific chemicals or ingredients. They rank items based on their ingredients so that you can feel empowered and confident that you are buying the best products for you and your family.

  7. Castor Oil: It’s chock full of skin-loving nutrients like vitamin E, omegas and polyphenols, and contains a fatty acid called ricinoleic acid that’s been shown to help balance inflammation. Castor oil is your modern day all-in-one cosmetic and self-care oil: combine with other natural ingredients to create DIY recipes for face and hair masks, exfoliant scrubs, nail and cuticle treatments and more. We love Queen of Thrones!

  8. Detox Foot Bath: These foot baths remove harmful toxins from your body while also helping increase energy, improve sleep, circulation and digestion. Book a detox foot bath at the office today!

Take each step one at a time. Use what you currently have at home and as soon as you run out of something, replace it with a better option.
